Given that his charges include illegal access to a PC and wiretapping, Christopher Chaney faces up to sixty(!) years in jail. Press reports reveal that he has been arrested last October in frames of a year-long investigation of celebrity hacking that the police called “Operation Hackerazzi”. The authorities claimed Christopher hacked into the email accounts of over fifty people in the entertainment industry, including Scarlett Johansson and Christina Aguilera. Scarlett Johansson’s nude pictures were later posted online. Christina Aguilera also had some private pictures put on the Internet.

Scarlett Johansson told Vanity Fair that the naked snaps were initially sent to Ryan Reynolds, her now former husband. Christopher Chaney, who didn’t work for News International, has mined through publicly available information to find out password and security questions for celebrity email accounts. After this he hijacked a forwarding feature in such a way that a copy of every letter the celebrities received was forwarded to an account he controlled and waited for the news to roll in.
Christopher’s hard drive contained loads of private celebrity pictures and a document compiling their extensive personal information. He is accused of giving the pictures to gossip sites and another hacker, without making money from this activity. Christopher Chaney has since said sorry.
